B.Sc. Integrated Sciencesamika

Hi! My name is Amika and I am a student in the Integrated Sciences program, and Vice Chair for the Mental Health Network. Mental Health is a topic that I am extremely passionate about, as it requires each of us to find our own balance. This is my second year with the MHN and have had the chance to work with many wonderful student leaders who share my passion. This year, I hope to continue to develop a stronger sense of community and increase engagement in mental health among UBC students, by supporting network member intiatives. I am always happy to discuss and receive your input about how we can help increase the awareness of mental health resources. I can be contacted at ubcmhn.vcmhnteam@gmail.com.

Sara Azarshahi
Administrative Manager (April 2015 to Present)
B.A. Psychology

Hello. My name is Sara Azarshahi and I am a third year psychology student at UBC, minoring in creative writing. I grew up in the Netherlands, where I spent most of my time on my fabulous little bike. My first year at UBC was definitely a wake up call. I realized that the promotion of mental health is a very important part of our community. This realization has had a great impact on me, and has ultimately led to my decision to major in psychology. From a young age, I have been very passionate about helping others. I will smile at anyone who walks by me on campus, may they be a stranger or a friend. In my spare time, I enjoy writing poetry and sharing it with my close friends.

Su Thazin Thin
Ambassador Co-Manager (April 2015 to Present)
B.Sc. Food, Nutrition and Health

I am overjoyed to be a part of the MHN  team this year. As a food enthusiast, I am particularly interested in how food contributes to the mental health and overall general health of our community. Throughout  my time at UBC, I have learnt the  role of  a strong support system in  our stress induced lives and this year I would really like to  echo and increase the awareness of the existence of MHN through all possible channels.  Outside school work, if I am not exploring BC I can be often seen breaking a sweat training or grooving and more often than not cooking my stress away.

Blake Peloquin
Ambassador Co-Manager (April 2016 to Present)
B.Sc. Pharmacology

Hi! My name is Blake and I am a second year student in the Pharmacology program. This is my second year being a part of the Mental Health Network. I am extremely excited to be an Ambassador Manager this year because I will get to work with like-minded individuals who share a passion for mental health. My goals this year are to educate my fellow students about mental health resources and create an environment where people are not afraid to talk about mental health related issues. I enjoy hiking, camping, skateboarding, snowboarding, hockey, and good food! My interests in helping people, physical health, and mental wellbeing are all key factors in my decision to pursue a career in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Mental health is a topic that I have always been interested in, as I have seen its impact in my life both personally and professionally. My goal with the UBC MHN Ambassadors is to further the mental health of our campus, and to promote knowledgeable and free discussion surrounding mental health topics. Outside of schoolwork, I enjoy playing music, watching films, going to concerts, and going out with friends.

Emily Huang
Media Manager (May 2015 to Present)
B.A. Psychology

Hi! My name is Emily and I am a fourth year psychology student. I will be working with MHN as their media manager for this upcoming year. I like to binge watch TV series, get sick of that, go into the wild, restore my inner peace, and back to watching more shows (It’s like procrastination. You hate it but you’re married to this lifestyle). In the rest of my free time, I enjoy reading, cycling, and hanging with friends. I believe that our mental state and physical body are interconnected and can have a profound affect on our overall well-being. My goal as media manager is to promote mental health and the importance of maintaining a positive outlook on life. I’m looking forward to meeting you all! I love fuzzy peaches.

Aninder Sarai
Community Project Manager (May 2016 to Present)
B.Sc. Biology

Hi! My name is Aninder Sarai and I am a fourth year student in the Biology Program. This is my second year involved with MHN, previously as an Ambassador and now as the Community Project Manager. I have been working diligently since the summer of 2016 to create a workshop centred on mental health for Grade 12 students. This workshop aims to bring awareness to mental health in a fun and interactive matter for these students as well provide a platform for them to gauge what the university experience is all about. Some key aspects of this workshop include: mental health statistics, self-care, stress management, self-talk and mental health and technology. We currently have about 10 schools interested in this workshop and will be venturing out to present soon! Some of my personal interests include being a foodie, site-seeing and reading for leisure!

Tanya Feng
Social Media Manager (April 2016 to Present)

I’m excited to be joining MHN as Social Media Manager this year and to be able to promote awareness about mental health on campus online, as I’ve witnessed the impact it can have on people close to me. Outside of classes, I enjoy hiking, yoga, skiing, and looking for my next great adventure (including this one!).

William Kennedy
Social Media Projects Manager (April 2016 to Present)
ALS Researcher Rossi Lab

Hello! My name is William, and I am a ALS researcher with the Rossi Lab.  As part of the team this year directing Social Media Projects, I am happy to promote how members around the UBC community are shaping how we think about mental health. As a researcher, I often find that stress is an ongoing concern of chasing long-term goals. However, by learning more about myself and through the support of amazing friends, I have built in safeguards to increasing stress. Through this, I seek to bring together groups over the next year who represent mental health on campus to establish a unified community for advocacy and support of student growth. Outside of the lab, I enjoy working out in the gym, skiing, long distance running, and rowing.
